A June 2022 HUD market report, citing the Sherman Economic Development Corporation and leaving out school districts, listed Tyson Foods at 1,750 employees, Texas Instruments at 700 and Grayson County government at 560. Those were the headline employers before the newest plants were running. Businesses that serve their crews, such as lunch counters, uniform sellers and truck repair, should name the service and the shift pattern rather than the company.
The plant projects are the second layer. Texas Instruments broke ground in May 2022 on wafer fabrication plants described at the time as a potential $30 billion investment for up to four facilities and about 3,000 jobs, and Wikipedia reports that a new plant near the southern city limits began operating in late 2025. GlobalWafers, through its GlobiTech subsidiary headquartered in Sherman since 1999, announced a $5 billion plant with 1,500 jobs. Reported totals vary by source and date, so treat them as context, not a forecast of demand.
Day to day, residents work in ordinary industries: retail trade (3,748 workers, 17.3%), health care and social assistance (2,712, 12.5%), manufacturing (2,065, 9.5%), accommodation and food services (1,976, 9.1%), education (1,776, 8.2%) and construction (1,537, 7.1%). Newcomers add to that mix, because the population rose from 44,052 in the ACS count to an estimated 47,473 in 2023. People who just arrived do not know which plumber or dentist the neighbors trust, so they compare listings, photos and reviews before calling.
Incomes sit below the typical city but not at the bottom. The median household earns $58,020 compared with $76,686, 12.8% of residents live below the poverty line (typical: 10.8%) and unemployment reads 3.6%. Only 22.6% of adults have a bachelor's degree, against 31.3%. Median age is 35.3, and 15.2% of residents are 65 or older, a bit above the 12.6% typical.
